Folks,
I've uploaded a new version, 0.6, of my Link Manager.
You can find it at http://zed1.com/b2links.
Changes include:
0.6 - Added ability to not show images. Partially functional
'add link' bookmarklet. Documented template functions.
The bookmarklet thing isn't working very well
I've only done it for Mozilla, I don't know how to create a javascript bookmarklet in IE. Any help would be appreciated. Plus it only works if you are already logged in to b2.
Feedback, bug reports/fixes, and general comments appreciated.
Enjoy,
Mike |

Just check in b2profile.php how b2 generates bookmarklets for IE, Mozilla and Opera. This should give you some insights |

I found this add-on today and successfully installed it. Install went great. It's live on my site already and works great so far. Excellent idea! Two thumbs way up!
My blog has several contributors so I added a field to the b2links table for link_owner. I'm not making use of that field yet. One thing at a time.
Thought I would let you know the positive feedback and that I am actively using it. I will report any bugs or problems as well as provide any enhancements (if any, as time allows).
My site is: http://www.lamelist.com/
Link Manager is generating the headings and links for the books, music and movies on the right. |

That's Great!
Thanks for the feedback.
I like the idea of the link_owner (I'm the only contributor to my blog so I didn't think of it)
Would you perhaps restrict it so that only the owner of a link (or admin) could edit/delete a link.
What about categories? Would they be per person, or a global list owned by admin?
Thanks, again

I hadn't thought about this yet. It would definitely be nice. I'll say "probably." Right now, my login is the only one with sufficient permissions to see the Link Manager.
BTW, I was impressed with how easy it was to add it to the menu bar and to set the permissions level. All in a text file! So smart. I realize that design was implemented in the b2 software and not Link Manager. Michael V reads the forums so I thought I would mention it while I'm thinking of it.

I prefer categories are owned by the admin (me). I don't forsee many categories. I had not provided links to other blogs yet because it was a pain to add them and upload the file. No longer. I'll add some soon.
I'll tell you what I am anxious to add. This is time-permitting (I am a freelancer and have several "real" projects to finish so that I get paid including one that takes me out of town next week.) I have one site (not a blog) where I implemented Amazon Web Services just to learn how to work with and parse XML data.
Amazon provides XML data for the items you request. I parse the XML and get data and build the link for the items I am interested in. Sounds dull. However, where it is cool is that by inputting only an ISBN (or amazon ASIN) number to the DB, I could build the link dynamically and eliminate the step of saving an image and uploading it. Also would not have to copy and paste the product title into either the link or the ALT tag. It's all in the XML data.
I have fun with the "now reading" links on the blog. (Have never sold anything, but that is not my objective.) By integrating XML with the Link Manager, it will be easier to change the links often. Make one inactive for awhile, re-activate it. Also lets the other contributor put their selections on the site without bugging me to do it.
I'm anxious to work on this, but please understand that I have other commitments and it will take at least a few weeks to start working on it even though this what I find most compelling. I definitely will provide the code and progress updates. |

Wow, some great ideas there.
If I get chance I'll probably work on the link owner thing. I also think I should introduce sorting (by url, by name, etc.) because once the list gets long it's less convenient to work with.
The Amazon/XML stuff sounds like a really good idea, I'll leave that to you though. XML is one of the things on my list of 'stuff to learn about', but I've little practical experience of it.
I look forward to your input.

Please note that while the text file lists permission levels for each section, it does NOT make sections inaccessible to disallowed levels.
You have to implement your own levels-checking (check how b2options.php does it, for example). |

I just added a fun, offbeat way to use the Link Manager. (No coding changes unlike my more grandiose ideas.)
http://www.lamelist.com/index.php
Scroll down a few screenfuls. On the right hand side is a graphic "mood meter" (big smilie face).
I set up 15 different smilie images similar in design to whichever is visible. Each one is entered into LinkManager. Only one is set as visible at a time. The reason I did this through LinkManager, is because it is so easy to log in and switch smilies through the interface. Heck, I can even change it while working at a client's office. (I'll be out of town working at a client's site next week. ) |

Changes are:

* Each link is owned by the user who created it. You can only edit or delete
links created by you or someone with a lower b2 administration level than you. |
You can find it at http://zed1.com/b2links
Feedback, bug reports/fixes, and general comments appreciated.
Enjoy,

Ehsan hi,
Unfortunately as the B2 Link Manager is an add-on to the B2 Content Management System, it requires a valid registered user.
I hope you enjoy using B2

maybe i'm stupid but here is my problem.
i don't understand what this sentences means. maybe u can exlain them to a more easier sentences.
Quote: | Execute the SQL from the file b2links.sql. This will create the two tables and add a default category and an example link.
Execute the SQL from the file b2links.sql. This will create the two tables and add a default category and an example link.
Edit the b2-include/b2menutop.txt file to add in the two new commands.
10 b2linkcategories.php Link Categories
10 b2linkmanager.php Link Manager
Note: there should be a tab character after the 10 and after the filename. |

OK. Taking it a step at a time.
First you need to create the database tables for the code to use.
The file b2links.sql contains the sql instructions to do that.
If you have telnet access to your server you can execute the command
mysql -uyourusername -p yourdatabasename < b2links.sql
You will have to subsitute your database username and database name. This should prompt you for a password, and then run the sql in the file and create the tables.
If you do not have telnet access, then you may have PHPMyAdmin (often linked from your control panel). That has an option to load a file of sql instructions and execute it .
You then need to edit the menutop.txt file. If you do not have a way to edit it on your server you could download the file from your server using whichever ftp program you normally use, edit it on your PC and then ftp it back up.
I hope this helps.

Awesome hack! Is there a way to make it so people with level 2 or above can add links?
That'd be great... Thanks! |
