My apologies for being dense. I read this thread at the board and am as far as before. Nowhere.

OK, I have a post. Click on TrackBack and it will tell me what the TrackBack URL for that post is. When I paste that URL in my browser nothing happens... So I must misunderstand that people would *link* to the trackback URL.... Which means that I have no clue to what to link to on a trackback enabled side either, lol.

Then there is pingback... Erm.... Lemme describe what I *think* happens: I put an URL into my post, b2 takes this URL and tries to ping info at it that it has been linked to. Then again, maybe I'm wrong and this only happens when I use a TrackBack URl... which leads me back to my TrackBack confusion! Argggh!!!

So yes, it's official - I really don't get it

Yeah, I had the same problem when I first got here (couple days ago).

Basically, both do a similar thing. If you reference another weblog you can (more or less) automatically let them know. If you want to use one of those two you have to enable them in the config file first. Beware: There is a small error in one of the scripts, a '?' is missing. Trackback: The way b2 implemented it, there is an extrafield where you enter the trackback-url.

Ping: The way it is implemented you simply link (with a perma-link) to the article your referencing and it does everything automatically.

trackback allows another person to make a reference from your post to someone else's recent entry in another b2 blog. say you post on your website that you made a hack for b2. now i go read that post and say, "that's a cool hack!" so i take the "trackback" url of your post. i paste that url into the trackback text box when i make a new post to reference that my post about your hack goes back to your post where you released the hack.

make sense? lol kinda does to me but i fyou want i can try again.

OK, I think it is starting to dawn on me - bare with me <g>

- To backtrack someone else his entry I need to make a normal link to his entry AND put his special trackback link in the box on the b2 edit form.

- The trackback link on MY page shows which sites used the special trackback link displayed.

- pingback is the same thing as trackback; just another technique but the result is the same.

Questions: a perma-link is mentioned. I have added a perma-link to each of my posts but if that were not there and a person just copy-and-pastes the URL from the address bar, would pingback/trackback to my site still work? (My idea: pingback maybe, trackback not because you need the special URL).

The bug in the script - I downloaded my b2 yesterday (Oct. 11, 2002). Do I still need to chance something?

Does the trackback/pingback work for all blogs which have those functions or does it only work between two b2's?

Btw - this scrip really rocks. What a great job huh?

Ah, okay...mebbe I'm getting it now. Tnx ppl :) It's begining to become clearer now....any particular files that has to be included fer trackback/pingback to work?

I dont knwo what version of B2 I have but it dosent have trackbacks or pingbacks. I think it has karma but that dosent work. Is there a way I can get Pings and tracks without uploading B2 ALL over again?
