|
|
First of all, this hack involves altering the database, specifically b2comments table. It is required to add a field called "comment_notify". Therefore, if you don't know how to utilize phpMyAdmin, please do not attempt to implement this hack without assistance. With or without assistance, backup your database first before you attempt anything to it. Don't say I didn't warn you.
The reason why I created this was because MT, I think, has a similiar feature where a commenter can "subscribe" to receive notifications of new comments on that particular post. So, this hack does exactly that.
You can also get the instructions and codes here.
Upgrade:
---
Now a visitor can subscribe/unsubscribe to a post without posting a comment using a separate form. This upgrade contains several error-checking mechanisms so your database would not get overloaded.
All of the modifications have to be carried out in order for it to work properly.

If you do use this hack, please post something so I know you are implementing it. If there are more users implementing this, I will be willing to upgrade it so that it's more independent and with more sensible capabilities. Thank you. _________________ Michael P.

If I get it right, this hack is for subscriptions on comments on a post? I noticed that you had a subscrition form for entries/posts on your site, is that an hack you did aswell? I'm very interested in that |

Ariza,
Yes, this hack/modification is for comments on a post but not all posts. It uses a new field in the comments table in your database to turn on and off the comment notification of a particular post a user subscribes to. And yes, that "subscribe/unsubscribe" form is also my hack. _________________ Michael P.

Michael, I've implented the hack now and I see that I must have misunderstood what your hack was all about. I would like a hack that where my vistors can subscribe through a form and then get notified whenever I post a new post. Not whenever someone has commented my post.. Do you know if an hack like that exists?
Thank you for your help!

Ariza,
Sorry you misunderstood the hack. Anyway, you could use bloglet.com for that purpose. _________________ Michael P.

If you by any chanse know the answer I would be grateful. Thank you so much for your help. |

Ariza,
You don't need to provide that information for b2. And be sure to use XML or RSS2 for the "server" and "type". Click on the question mark for help.
If you have any more questions, please create a new thread. _________________ Michael P.

Awesome hack, man. I did something like this on my website and now a friend wants it. Problem is I was not sure of every step I would need to copy from my hack, ehehehe.
Only one suggestion for the next version... My hack uses a separate table (b2subscriptions) so I don't have to worry about all the code messing with b2comments. On the other hand with my hack once you subscribe you're stuck for life.
The hack will be used here: http://www.rafainc.com
Thanks for sharing it with us! |

Hello Cyberian,
I've implement your hack but I've got problems.
I use the upgrade.
In the first time, the notification works but mysql says : I can't store your comment / problem with the database / contact the webmaster... I'm the webmaster ! So, I delete the comment_notify colum in database... and now the comments are stored but the notification doesn't work anymore...
My question is : Must I follow all the step of installation since the first version, and after the upgrade to succed; or does it must work with only the upgrade steps ?
I'm not a phpman.
Thankx for all,
